The holidays are in full-force and most likely, so is your social calendar.  Staying fit throughout the holidays has been a longtime struggle for many due to never-ending parties, accompanied by cocktails, must-try appetizers and decadent desserts.  So, how do you go about staying fit throughout the madness?

1. Schedule Time For Fitness

The holidays are often jam packed with activities, leaving you little time for yourself.  However, in order to stay on top of your health (and sanity!), block off 30 minutes in your daily schedule to get moving.  Scheduling a time to sweat will keep you in a healthy routine, rev your metabolism (for all the extra goodies) and boost your energy levels!

2. Eat

That’s right, you read this correctly- I said eat.  And by eating, I mean stick to a healthy eating plan every day.  Sure you’re going to indulge every now and then, but generally, you should be eating 3 balanced meals a day. 

Don’t limit yourself throughout the day due to a dinner party in the evening—arriving to a party hungry is a sure way to overeat. Have a snack, ideally high in protein, before heading to an evening party so you’re not salivating at the sight of food!

3. Drink

During the holidays, people tend to be more inclined to treat themselves to an extra glass of wine, beer or cocktail in the presence of friends and family.  However, most people tend to neglect an extra glass of water.  Not only does alcohol dehydrate the body, but also colder weather deceives us into thinking we’re hydrated because we’re not “thirsty”. 

To keep your body functioning you need half your body weight in ounces of water each day—if you’re 150 lbs aim to drink ~75 ounces of water per day!  Keep a water bottle on you at all times and drink up! Cheers!

4. Be Merry!

The holidays are all about enjoying time with friends and family…so enjoy yourself!Don’t deprive yourself of favorite treats, just keep up with your exercise routine and eat balanced meals throughout the day! Don’t beat yourself up if you pig out at a party, just vow to do better tomorrow and make smarter choices at the next gathering!

When you stick to a healthy lifestyle you have room to indulge every now and then!
