As a Raleigh native, I grew up learning about Jimmy V, his foundation and his infamous ESPY speech.  His remarkable speech never gets old...each time I hear it seems like the first time.

As I've gotten older I've come to appreciate his words of wisdom he left us with.  I'm inspired to be a better person, enjoy the preciousness of life and be enthusiastic about accomplishing my dreams.

Two parts of Jimmy's speech always stand out to me:

1. "There are three things we all should do every day...number one is laugh. You should laugh every day. Number two is think. You should spend some time in thought. Number three is, you should have your emotions moved to tears, could be happiness or joy... If you laugh, you think, and you cry, that’s a full day. That’s a heck of a day."

My challenge for you: Live in the moment.  Embrace the trials and tribulations with as much passion as you would embrace the moments of happiness and delight.  Live with intensity.  Let yourself feel, whether it be through laughter, thought or tears.

2. "How do you go from where you are to where you want to be? I think you have to have an enthusiasm for life. You have to have a dream, a goal. You have to be willing to work for it."

My challenge for you: Write down an important goal for yourself. Next, write down the first step you'll take in accomplishing it.  Remember, you have to be willing to work for your goals.  Nothing meaningful in life will be handed to you on a silver platter.

In honor of the 7th annual Jimmy V week, I leave you with an uplifting, compelling, heartfelt tribute video to the honorable Jim Valvano.  May his legacy continue to inspire generations to come...
