I recently read a quote regarding the influx of gym-goers after the New Year. It went something like this- "unless you were born in a gym, everyone had to join at one point". I thought this was a great quote because for some reason, people falsely believe they "own" the gym or have more of a right to be there than the new members during January and February. Newsflash: you don't!
To survive the gyms during the busiest months, stick to 3 rules:
- Switch up your routine- are you an "after-work gym rat"? 5:30-6:30pm is a popular time for adult gym-goers- instead switch to AM or lunch workouts 3 days a week!
- Arrive early- love fitness classes? Arrive earlier than normal to give yourself plenty of time to get a spot!
- Go outside- although it may not sound appealing during the winter, find a buddy to be your outdoor workout partner! You won't have to battle any crowds when you're outside!
Yes, you might need to arrive to a fitness class earlier than normal or spend more time finding a spot in the parking lot, but the bottom line is, new gym members have the same right as you to be there!
Instead of giving into frustration, why not celebrate that more people are trying to control their health?!
